Every year at least someone in our family gets sick.   I say at least but it’s usually all of us at some point during cold and flu season.  I’m not a huge fan of the flu vaccine especially when pregnant so we try to keep ourselves healthy through other ways.   While we don’t always manage to completely steer clear of illness’, we do manage to keep our days spent in bed or on the couch sick to a minimum.

Get extra sleep – Realistically, we should be going to sleep when the sun sets and wake up when it rises.  Yeah that doesn’t really happen does it!?!  However, we can aim to get some extra sleep by making a goal to get into bed just 30 minutes earlier than our normal bedtime.  Before you know it, that extra 30 minutes will be routine and you can aim to add a few more minutes to make an even earlier bedtime.
  2. Exercise – Even if it’s just 15 minutes of walking outdoors any form of exercise is better than none.  Not only will it give you more energy but it’s shown that maintaining an active lifestyle helps to keep your immune system up!
  3. Eat clean – Seems like this should be an easy one for some reason during the winter we tend to slack off on eating balanced meals.  We should aim to fill our plate with LOTS of veggies, protein, some fruits and healthy carbs.  Oh and don’t forget those fats!  Most important are the fruits and veggies which are loaded with antioxidants and nutrients to help you combat winter sickness.
  4. Stay social – Don’t be like a bear during the winter and hibernate.  Sure you’ll be reducing your risk to germs by staying indoors but you’ll be missing out on fun dates with friends that will keep your spirits up.
  5. Take supplements – Even if you think you’re getting all the nutrients you need from your foods chances are you aren’t!  This is why you should first, ask your doctor for a full blood work up to see what areas you’re lacking in.  Then second, stock up on healthy, clean supplements to keep your immune system up and body healthy.

I’m a little sad that I’m titling my post this way.  The LAST weekend before Christmas?  Already?  I just love this month so much that I hate to see it go but am excited for what the new year has to offer 🙂

What I ate Wednesday through my iPhone

I’m still alive and I’m not completely buried under boxes anymore.  I’m definitely not 100% unpacked yet but we’re getting there.

One thing that’s still in boxes is my DSLR camera.  Luckily I’ve always got my handy-dandy iPhone to snap photos when I need them.  I just so happened to remember to take a bunch of food pictures yesterday to join in the What I Ate Wednesday party today!

It’s already Wednesday!  Wow, this week is flying by!

Yesterday I started my day off with one of my favorite breakfasts but with a new twist.  I love overnight oats.  Even though it’s getting colder, I’m still going to eat them because they are oh so good!  I usually make them pretty plain with just oats, greek yogurt, stevia, and almond milk.  Then I’ll top them with some kind of nut butter.  Well this particular batch I decided to get fancy!

Chocolate Raspberry Coconut Overnight Oats

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 2 tbsp non-fat greek yogurt
  • 1/2 scoop chocolate protein powder
  • 1/4 cup organic raspberries
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened shredded coconut
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk or milk of choice

Instructions

  1. Mix all ingredients together in a bowl. The mixture will be thin but will thicken up as it sits overnight. If it is not thin enough, add a little more milk. Feel free to add more oats too! Cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours. In the morning, stir and enjoy!

After breakfast we headed off to the gym for boot camp.  The Love Nugget still does not like being dropped off at the daycare.  He starts fussing when I tell him were we are going and then when we pull into the parking lot and is clinging to me as soon as we get out of the car.  However, once I’m gone, he’s running around playing and having a ball!

I’ve been wanting to take him to the library for their Mother Goose on the Loose for quite sometime now so as soon as we left the gym we headed over there.  It was super cute and the Love Nugget wasn’t quite sure what to make of the funny lady that was singing, dancing and clapping around the room.  I think he liked it though 🙂

On the way home, I snacked on a Strawberry Cheesecake Quest Bar.  I love this flavor but think I’ll switch it up next time and get the Cinnamon Roll.  Another favorite!

 

Lunch was an idea I borrowed from my friend Melissa at Fit ‘N’ Well Mommy.  She always posts pictures of her egg white in a mug over spinach for lunch so I thought I’d have something similar.

 

Two egg whites mixed with chopped spinach then microwaved in a bowl for 1 min 30 seconds and topped with goat cheese and smashed avocado.  It was delish!  I also enjoyed a Satsuma Mandarin on the side.  Love these things!

For dinner I had planned to have butternut squash ravioli with a goat cheese pumpkin sauce but we decided to go get a Christmas tree and go out to eat instead.  We were going to go cut a tree down this weekend but a BIG storm is coming in tomorrow and sticking around through the weekend so we figured tramping through the mud with a toddler wouldn’t be too much fun.  So, a Christmas tree lot it was for us this year!  Which was okay since I’m super picky about my trees and we usually spend a lot of time searching for the “perfect” tree.  When they are already cut for you, it makes choosing a little easier 🙂

After we picked out a tree, we went to sushi for dinner.  Most of  you know that we don’t eat out all that often.  For one, because I’m a pretty picky eater and usually leave unsatisfied and two because I like to know where my food came from and how it is being prepared.  However, we are both always happy and full when we leave our favorite sushi restaurant Mikuni.  It’s so good!  Tonight we started with two Sapporos and some edemame followed by cucumber salad and pepperfin.

Then we each ordered a roll even though I knew it would be too much food for me to eat!  I ordered the Annie Roll without panko shrimp and the hubby ordered a Michi Roll.  Both with soy wraps just because they are easier to eat and we prefer the taste.

After dinner we walked down to the fountain so the Love Nugget could watch the water.  He loves this thing, especially at night.

 

We also made a stop in the cute little candy shop to see if they had the lemon cream almonds.  No luck but they did have a few other yummy treats.  This mint chocolate Christmas Tree pretzel was pretty good!

 

We also grabbed a few peppermint caramels, chocolate covered almonds, and chocolate covered cherries.  I tried one of each!

I ended my evening with a hot cup of peppermint tea.  Ahh… I love winter time tea.
