Summer Reading with Disney Story Central!

Summer Reading with Disney Story Central!

Summer’s here get hot and even though we are barely into June we’re already experiencing temperatures over 100 degrees!  It’s pretty miserable especially when we’re also in a drought and can’t head outdoors to play in water to cool off.  So with an active four year old I’m having to find fun things to do indoors to keep him entertained.  I try to keep him busy with painting, playing with playdough, building indoor forts, reading books, dancing to music etc.  Like a normal 4 year old these days though he really enjoys watching T.V. or playing on an iPad.  Since we limit his technology time we try to make sure we don’t over do it with this.  When he does get technology time, we try to make sure that it’s learning centered.

Lately we’ve been enjoying allowing him to read interactive books on Disney Story Central.

Toddler Tuesday – Technology quiz

The other day I was browsing my Parents magazine and came across a quiz titled, “r u raising a digitally healthy child?”  If you remember back in August I touched on the topic of technology with kids and how it was a struggle with us to find a balance between what we felt like should be allowed and what was recommended.  Ever since my doctor basically told me NO techonology until after 2, I’ve become more of a stickler for the amount of screen time that The Love Nugget is allowed.   Even though he’s past the age of 2, I want him to learn that he doesn’t need the iPhone, TV or video games to have a good time.  We definitely still allow some educational games on our phones, and he LOVES to watch Dora or Thomas from time to time however, it’s not something we turn to daily.  So when I saw this quiz, I thought I would ace it for sure since it seemed like we had a pretty good healthy balance going on.

Toddler Tuesday – Technology and Kids

Toddler Tuesday – Technology and Kids

I grew up in the 80’s – 90’s, born in 1981 (probably much earlier than most of you 🙂 We lived on a large piece of property with a plethora of things to do. We could build forts, go for bike rides, swim in the creek, and spend countless hours just being outdoors playing. We didn’t watch a lot of T.V. and it wasn’t until I was 10 or 11 that we got a Nintendo for Christmas. I remember playing it but we were allowed only a limited time daily and still spent a large majority of our time outside. I don’t think it was until I was in high school that we purchased a computer. If I remember correctly it looked something like this,

Again, we used it but more mainly for school assignments and once we did finally get the internet, it took so long to connect (the annoying dial up sound is playing in my head right now) that we didn’t get on all that often.
