The Love Nugget is a huge book worm and we LOVE it!  It’s so fun to see him engaged in stories as we read them, choosing books over toys in the store, and sitting in his chair going through baskets of books rather than watching T.V.  We encourage reading in our house in many different ways and so far it seems to be helping.

Toddler Tuesday – Childhood Play

Toddler Tuesday – Childhood Play

The teacher in me, wants to help The Love Nugget to succeed in school by teaching him.  Often times I focus on him having enough learning toys, on reading books, building with blocks, or practicing flash cards.  He actually loves all these things and enjoys doing them but more often than not I’ll look to learning opportunities over pure and simple play.

Both are equally important but it seems as our society puts so much emphasis on meeting certain standards, we as parents feel the need to push our children to learn more.

I could list tons of statistics on how American children are failing in comparison to children from other countries.  But is that all that matters?

I mean, I know those scores are important.  I know how crucial it is for our children to be able to read, to write, to calculate, to do well in school but I also know that without play children are missing a huge part of their childhood.

The part that helps them learn how to solve problems on their own. to play/work independently, to use their imagination which is directly related to cognitive development.

Research shows that children should be allowed to play both indoors and outdoors for large blocks of time.  I’ve taken my fair share of childhood developmental classes and am well aware of this but I also taught Second Grade where standardized testing is pushed so hard on children.

I’ve seen how stressed these young kids can get about doing good and pleasing their parents and teachers.  As a teacher, this makes me want to teach The Love Nugget so that he will do well without having to stress as much when that time comes.

However, I’m constantly reminding myself how crucial that play time is.

Playtime with others, by himself, outside, insides, with blocks, with trucks, in the dirt, in the rain, with measuring cups, or with toys.  Just pure and simple play 🙂
