How my Diet has Changed

Let me ask you a question.  Do you still eat the exact same foods you did when you were a kid?  In college?  Or even last year?  The answer is probably no right?  I mean, sure you may eat some of the same foods but I doubt you’re eating cocoa puffs, Mc Donalds Happy meals or frozen Lean Cuisines right?  Our diets were constantly changing as we grew and changed.  Even though we are now adults, we are still constantly evolving.  We might find a new food we like or dislike, a new fitness program we enjoy, or a new diet that works for us in that moment.

Which is 100% okay!

I’ve always been a firm believer in finding what works for you. [Read more…]

Best foods for Fertility and the Two Week Wait

Last week I posted about some natural ways I’m trying to boost my chance of getting pregnant and staying pregnant.  I mentioned I’d be following up that post with a few more detailed ones on diet, supplements and fitness.  So as promised here’s the first of the series starting with the best, the food!

Raising good eaters

Raising good eaters

I was having a conversation with a fellow mom the other day about her desire to lose weight and eat healthier.  She was telling me how she tried to make the better choices when it came to food but struggled because her husband doesn’t eat the same way.  She also mentioned how she wants her son to eat good foods but was guilty of going through the drive through at McDonalds and giving him some of her french fries.  It made me think of this video;

One that would be good for ALL parents to watch.  It shows how our feeding habits, even from a very early age, can have a lasting effect on our children.  Which is why we are pretty careful about the food we feed our son.

Does this mean he doesn’t get any treats ever?

Big Bowl of Chocolate Avocado Pudding (recipe coming soon!)

No, of course not.

We just try to instill very healthy eating habits by modeling good food choices and by offering good, clean food 90% of the time.  Even when we offer a treat it tends to be one made with natural or organic sweeteners.

One reason I’m big on this because as a teacher I saw first hand how kids are affected by the food they eat.  I hear all the time, “Oh, sugar doesn’t make kids hyper, that is a myth.”  I disagree.  Spend a day in a classroom with 25 eight year olds when there is any type of sugar consumed and chances are you’ll change your mind.  Yes, some kids don’t react as much to sugar.  However, the majority of children when given the stimulant (and that’s what sugar is) will show some change in behavior.  Wether it be a slight increase in hyperactivity, a focusing change or a sudden crash in activity level, these changes definitely occur in children.  My son included.

I know very well that parenting is tough.  For the first 6 months of The Love Nugget’s life he screamed and I’ll admit that there was more than one day I asked The Hubby if we could send him back!  It was rough.  And there have been many other rough times since then.  Times when he throws a fit because he wants to watch T.V.  Times where he screams at the dinner table because he doesn’t want to taste his cauliflower.  Times where he begs non-stop for popsicles or ice cream.  With all of those times I have thought about caving.  Just giving him the damn popsicle even though it was an hour before dinner.  Letting him watch T.V. regardless of the fact that we told him he lost that privilege earlier in the day.  Or even excusing him from the dinner table without tasting each food on his plate (our number one rule at meals).

However, The Hubby and I both believe in following through with the rules and guidelines we set for him.  More often than not he gets over his screaming tantrum pretty quickly when he realizes we aren’t going to cave.   We also aim to be good role models with our eating habits.  Before we even had kids we ate pretty clean and now that we have The Love Nugget we eat even healthier.

I truly believe that modeling is the first way to teach our kids which is why we are so big on eating healthy almost all of the time not just some of the time.

I think it’s something we as parents should all be trying our best to do in order to keep our children healthy and to stop the obesity epidemic from continuing in our country.

Jamie Oliver is amazing.  Watch 🙂

3 week Paleo Challenge – You in?

3 week Paleo Challenge – You in?

Who’s up for a challenge?

I love a good challenge and am in need of a reboot on my Paleo eating habits.  I do pretty good at sticking to the basics but lately have been enjoying a few too many naturally sweetened treats, dairy splurges and alcoholic beverages.  As a result I’ve been feeling a bit off lately.  A little more sluggish, a little more brain fog, and occasional upset stomach along with some digestive distress.  The Hubby has been feeling  it too and we talked about doing a round of the Whole 30 but decided it was going to be a little tough with all the traveling and events we have coming up.  So instead we’ll be doing a 3 week Paleo re-boot to get back on track.  After talking to a few friends and readers it seems some of you may be interested in participating as well.  So I’m thinking about putting together a fun challenge that anyone can participate in and am hoping to get some great sponsors and prizes for you all!

Here’s the gist of it;

Paleo Challenge Rules –

  • No Gluten
  • No Dairy
  • No Sugar (Some natural sweeteners allowed)
  • No Processed foods (with a few exceptions)
  • No Legumes
  • No Soy
  • Limit Alcohol
  • Limit Paleo Treats

I will post a Google spreadsheet on my blog and Facebook page for you to check off daily if you met the challenge.  At the end of the three weeks those with the most days completed will win a prize!

I’ll be posting meal plans and recipes each week to assist you with keeping on track.  June 30th will kick off the start date and will end July 21st.  Don’t be hesitant about joining because it’s running through Fourth of July!  I’ll be sharing some yummy festive recipes and tips to staying on track 🙂

BUT before I get started on meal planning and posting recipes I’d love to hear if you would be interested in participating.  If so just comment down below.  If enough people seem up for the challenge I’ll get the spreadsheet ready and begin organizing and planning meals for you all!  Trust me it will be fun!!!  Plus, maybe you’ll win!

QUESTIONS –

  • Are you interested?
  • Have you ever done a food challenge before?  Paleo… No sugar… Vegan…
  • If so, how’d you do?

Packing for a Paleo Road Trip

Packing for a Paleo Road Trip

As you know we just got back from a fun family vacation to Disneyland!

Rather than hop on a plane for a short, one hour flight, we decided to make it a 7 hour journey and drive.  I used to live in Southern Cali so have done the drive several times before.  While it’s not the most fun, it’s really not that bad.  Especially when you are prepared with lots of magazines, games and healthy Paleo snacks!

What I Ate During My Whole 30!

What I Ate During My Whole 30!

I did it!  30 days of no processed foods (with the exception of a few LARABARS and beef jerky), no gluten, no legumes, no sugar (including maple syrup, honey, or stevia), no dairy, and no alcohol.  The last one is what I missed the most.  Not that I’m a lush or anything but I enjoy a glass of wine a few times a week and this was definitely missed.  However, I will say that I feel…

 amaz

I’m going to be posting a full recap of my results tomorrow but for today, since it’s What I Ate Wednesday I wanted to focus on what I ate over the past 30 days.

Week 2 Whole 30 recap and Week 3 meal plan

Week 2 Whole 30 recap and Week 3 meal plan

Good Morning!

I had hoped to get a recap from week two of my Whole30 yesterday but our internet has been down since Friday so I’ve been a little behind…  Plus, we were gone all day Friday then my mom came to stay the night and we were out running errands most the day yesterday.  With some added fun family time I’ll be sharing with you tomorrow for Marvelous Monday!

Since I didn’t’ get my meals from the week up yesterday I’ll be sharing those today along with my meal plan for week 3 of the Whole30.  Which by the way is going really good!  I can’t wait to recap the whole thing at the end of the month but I will say I’m already feeling so much better.  I’m not even half way through and I already want to tell everyone to jump on board and try it so they feel as great as I do!

WIAW – Whole30 Meal prepping addition

WIAW – Whole30 Meal prepping addition

Morning friends!

I’m two days into the Whole30 and feeling good!

So far it’s not too bad since it’s not that far off from how I was already eating bu yesterday was a little tough.  I had a super early appointment then a lunch at a local farm hosted by Placer Grown and a later than usual outing for The Hubby’s flag football game.  I stayed strong and skipped on the wine, bread, dressing and fresh local feta cheese but that left me with a plate of arugula, a few pomegranates and pear slices.  Hmmm… needless to say I was a little hungry when we got home but luckily I had prepped a ton of Whole30 foods on Sunday so some quick, pre-mixed tuna salad was a lifesaver!

Speaking of Sunday food prep, I hear a lot of people who have completed the Whole30 saying meal planning and food prep was key to their success. Since I’ve had a lot of interest in how things are going and just an overall interest in the Whole30, I thought I’d share with you all that I prepped for the week.

Peas and Crayons

So not really a What I Ate Wednesday but What I Food Prepped Sunday 🙂 Still, since it’s food related, I’m linking up with Jenn at Pea’s and Crayons.

Why I quite trying to name the way I eat.

Why I quite trying to name the way I eat.

So you may have noticed that I haven’t been mentioning Paleo eating as much as I was before.  There’s a few reasons really,

  1.  I haven’t been following as close to the Paleo diet as I once was.
  2. I felt like I was being a hypocrate since I didn’t eat 100% Paleo and enjoyed sharing other non-Paleo foods.
  3. I’ve quite trying to categorize or title the way I eat
