My running goals and weekly workouts

My running goals and weekly workouts

Hi there!

Hope everyone’s enjoying their weekend!

I’m up early and off for a morning jog then home to pack lunch and head out for a day with the family! ¬†Love Sunday’s ūüôā

Speaking of running, the Nike Women’s Half Marathon is just over a month away! ¬†I’m excited and feeling good with my training. ¬†Definitely still taking it easy and trying not to get too intense with my runs.

Here’s a few things I’m focusing on to keep my body healthy, [Read more…]

It happened but in a way, I’m glad it did

I kept hearing about it happening to others.

I watched The Hubby go through a few of them.

I saw some workout friends do it then finally it happened to me.

Crossfit – Isn’t it all Heavy Lifting?

Crossfit – Isn’t it all Heavy Lifting?

Good morning!

Let’s talk Crossfit shall we?

Mainly a misconception it seems a lot of people have about the sport and I’ll admit I was one of them.

“I can’t do ALL the heavy lifting they do in Crossfit.”

I think a lot of people think Crossfit is only about heavy lifting.  You see photos of crossfitters with the barbell quite often because yes, you do use a bar in Crossfit quite a bit.

“What do you do in Crossfit Class?”

“What do you do in Crossfit Class?”

Since beginning Crossfit I’ve gotten a lot of questions from friends, family and readers. ¬†Many of those questions are ones I had before I started, so I thought it might be helpful if I answered them for you.

Keep in mind that all Crossfit boxes are not universal so what I discuss on here being done in mine might be completely different from another.

QUESTION – “What’s a Crossfit Box?

A Crossfit box is actually the gym itself.  Boxes are popping up all over the place these days but they typically have a warehouse feel and are filled with all things needed for a Crossfit workout.

QUESTION – “I often see people posting WODS that are only 10 minutes long. ¬†Is that how long the entire class is?”¬†

This is definitely a misconception I had way back when Crossfit started getting popular. ¬†I remember reading blogs where they shared their Workout of the day (WOD) and thinking, “Really? ¬†That’s it?” ¬†Nope! ¬†Most crossfit classes are an hour long. ¬†As I said not every box is the same but here’s an example of what an hour would look like at Destiny Crossfit where I go.

photo 1 (3)

Warm Рup starts right on the dot.  No late arrivals allowed!  Crossfitters line up in lanes and complete several warm up exercises including cross arm skip, knee to chest, high foot lunge, lateral lunge, walking mechanics, fast karaoke and slow karaoke.

Then it’s some form of running mechanics such as Rip N Out, Push up starts, 2 point starts, or falling starts.

Followed by something like stick jumps, bear crawls, ring series, or ladders.

There’s usually something to get your heart rate up such as tabata box jumps, heavy jump ropes, wall balls, Burpee tuck jumps or maybe double unders.

Just before the WOD is always technical work Рpush press, snatch, back squats, cleans, front squat, dead lift, thrusters or some other technical move.

Next comes the WOD or Workout of the day. ¬†WODs ufually range in time from 5-20 minutes. ¬†It might be a AMRAP – As Many Rounds As Possible WOD or an EMOM – Every Minute On the Minute. ¬†Maybe it’s a For Time workout where you do the WOD as fast as possible or maybe even a partner WOD where you do one exercise while your partner does another then switch.

after the WOD we complete a stabilization which might be toes to bar, kettlebell twists, pistols, ring dips, or some other form of stabilization.

QUESTION – “Don’t you miss your cardio?”¬†

There is actually quite a bit of cardio involved in Crossfit. ¬†The other day we did a wod that included 30 bodyweight squats (squating ¬†your body weight), 1 mile run then 30 burpees over the bar. ¬†Definitely some cardio in there! ¬†I tend to favor the cardio based WOD’s more than the heavy lifting because of my cardio background. ¬†I think a common misconception with Crossfit is that it’s all heavy lifting. ¬†Not so! ¬†Yes there is a good amount of lifting but also a good amount of cardio. ¬†I still do a few days outside of crossfit of spinning or sprinting but I only crossfit 2-3 days a week. ¬†If I were doing more I might not add as much extra cardio.

QUESTION – “I’m out of shape how can I possibly start Crossfit?”¬†

You have to start somewhere right? ¬†Crossfit is a great place to start because it teaches you the basic¬†fundamental¬†movements to give you a¬†strong base. ¬† ¬†There are many different levels of individuals in Crossfit and even some of those who have been there for years are still scaling back the workouts. ¬†You can also search for a gym that offers Crossfit Light classes like the one I workout at, Destiny Crossfit, just started offering. ¬†A scaled back workout and a little more one on one time spent with beginners, it’s perfect for anyone wanting to see what Crossfit is about without jumping in full board. ¬†

QUESTION – “Won’t I get bulky?” ¬†

I’m not going to lie, this is something I still worry about. ¬†Everybody is different so this is a tricky one. ¬†Yes, some women might get a little bulky. ¬†However, it takes A LOT of heavy lifting to get really big. ¬†It also depends on your diet and what your goals are. ¬†I have noticed that my thighs have gotten bigger. ¬†However, I’ve also had to cut back on my extra cardio and up my calories/fat to gain weight for fertility so this had definitely played a roll in that increase. ¬†It’s important to take into account ¬†your body type and your goals. ¬†If you don’t want to gain a ton of muscle, then you don’t have to lift as heavy as some others might be. ¬†It’s all up to you ūüôā ¬† AND there is no way (unless you are taking crazy supplements and trying your hardest) that you will look anything like the woman pictured above!

I’m still learning the ropes of Crossfit and am not sure I’ll ever be pro but am enjoying the challenges.

Do you have fun plans for the weekend? ¬†Are you watching the Super Bowl? ¬†Silly question right as I’m sure the majority of you are. ¬†I am even though I’m not a huge football fan. ¬†I do enjoy hanging out with friends and enjoying each others company so it’s pretty much just an excuse to do that ūüôā

Since it’s Friday I’m dropping in real quick for a Five on Friday post before we head off to the gym. ¬†Enjoy your weekend!

Fitness Friday is back!

Good morning and happy Friday to you all!

I took a break from Fitness Friday to try and steer my focus off of fitness while I tried to cut back on my exercising for health reasons. ¬†If you missed it you can read more about why here but basically, Aunt Flow hasn’t been to visit in several months and I’m assuming, over exercising is the reason. ¬†I know some of you are probably thinking, “Why do you want her back?” ¬†Well, I don’t think it’s natural and normal to just stop having a cycle altogether. ¬†So I’m working on little things I might be able to do to help bring her back.

A Marvelous Weekend and Chocolate Chip Protein Cookie recipe!

A Marvelous Weekend and Chocolate Chip Protein Cookie recipe!

It’s time for another round up of Marvelous happenings from our weekend! ¬†I enjoy recapping the fun times we had on Monday’s as I feel like it’s such a great way to kick off the week. ¬† Of course thank you as always to the lovely Katie at Healthy Diva Life for hosting this little soiree ūüôā

Without further ado, here’s a look at our marvelous weekend!

Friday I got to see my best friend, her husband and their new baby girl Emery!

photo 2 (24) (500x500)

You may remember my bestie from back in April when I threw her a baby shower. ¬†We don’t get to see each other all that often since they lives in Seattle. ¬†They were driving through town on their way to Tahoe for a family vacation so we got to spend a few hours catching up over lunch. ¬†I also got in my baby fix squeezing those adorable cheeks! ¬†So cute!

Later that afternoon when The Hubby got home, we headed back to The Fountains for the First Friday street fair which turned out to be a disappointment. ¬†I was hoping they’d have more kid stuff but there wasn’t much except for a face painter, balloon animal maker and a girl dressed up as Tinkerbell. ¬†We looked at classic cars and walked around before heading home to have a little Fiesta.

PicMonkey Collage(My cool guys looking at the cool cars, chips, salsa, guacamole, wine and a chicken fajita salad)

We ended the evening by watching an episode of True Blood before heading to bed.

Saturday I woke up early to make the 7:45 boot camp class. ¬†I had suggested the trainer lead the class in a Tabata style workout (which he had never heard of before) so I got there earlier than normal to help him set up. ¬†It turned out to be a great class and everyone said it was a killer workout. ¬†Great way to start the day! ¬†I came home, changed then we headed out the door for a Crossfit get together put on by The Hubby’s gym at the lake.

It was a gorgeous day and a family event so we brought The Love Nugget along too.

Who showed off his lifting skills ūüôā

The Hubby and I did a quick WOD together which consisted of AMRAP of 5 push-ups with egg pass, 10 air squats with egg toss and 15 partner sit-ups with egg pass. ¬†It was fun to get to workout with him as we never really get a chance to anymore. ¬†Then we showed off our awesome family hoola-hooping skills ūüėČ

PicMonkey Collage2

Okay I’m lying, we sucked. ¬†Especially me! ¬†I’m horrible at hoola-hooping!

Later that evening we went to a friends house for dinner.

PicMonkey Collage3

These two had a blast playing together and we enjoyed some wine, cocktails and a very marvelous dinner of grilled halibut, zucchini and a spinach salad.

Sunday morning after breakfast we packed up a lunch and headed to Amador to pick up a few wine shipments and enjoy a little picnic.

PicMonkey Collage4

It was a gorgeous day and we came home with quite a bit of yummy wine since we were behind on picking up the past few shipments.  Works for me!

Later that afternoon the Love Nugget wanted to make cookies for Dada and he needed some protein goodies for the week so I made a batch of Chocolate Chip Protein Cookies!
