Keep Bugs Away Naturally with

Keep Bugs Away Naturally with

I’ve always joked that I have this naturally sweet blood that mosquitos and other bugs just love.  That’s because I literally get attacked by bugs when I’m outdoors.  Especially this time of year.  When the weather is warming up and there’s standing water which is breeding ground for pesky mosquitos.

Unfortunately my son got my same sweet blood because he typically gets eaten alive as well.  Not only is this a very annoying issue to have because of the actual bites, but it’s frustrating since the only way to keep them at bay is with bug sprays that have dangerous chemicals.  At least before that was an issue, but we’ve recently discovered a new, natural way to keep the bugs off.

An at Home Valentine’s Dinner from Whole Foods

An at Home Valentine’s Dinner from Whole Foods

The Hubby and I decided to just stay home for Valentine’s Day.  Actually, my birthday is today and my mom is coming down tomorrow so we are sort of celebrating it tonight with a nice, romantic dinner at home.  One that I had a blast picking out yesterday at my favorite grocery store, Whole Foods!

Happy Wednesday folks!

It’s my third day of the Whole 30 and I’m loving it so far!   I was telling a friend yesterday that it’s so much easier for me to do these 30 days during fall or winter.  For one because there isn’t as much fresh fruits which I crave endlessly and two because of the abundance of whole 30 comfort food recipes.  So good!  Although I’m only on day 3 I foresee this month being fairly easy for me to stick with it.   If you’re doing it as well, hopefully it is for you too!

Anyway, if you follow me on Instagram you’ve been seeing my meal posts.  If not you should!  Regardless, I’m linking up with Jenn today to share my Whole30 eats from yesterday 🙂

As many of you know I’ve been working at healing my hypothyroidism for a few months now.  I try not to clog your feed with thyroid posts but every so often I like to check in and let you know some things I’m doing in case you or someone you know has the same issues.  If you missed my previous thyroid posts you can read them here, or here.

Diet has been one area that is easy to focus on as a means of  healing.  I like food and I already eat very clean so it’s not hard to make a few tweaks here and there in order to assist thyroid healing.  I shared some foods before that were good for thyroid health one of those being brazil nuts.  Mostly for their Selenium quantities.  Selenium is essential for healthy thyroid function and healthy metabolism.  Luckily there are some Selenium rich foods that we can incorporate into our diet to increase the level in our bodies therefor benefiting our thyroid.  Unfortunately, the food that is highest in selenium is not my favorite.

It’s crazy how much life is different for kids these days than when we were growing up.  As a child, I spent my free time outside riding bikes, building forts and just playing.  If it was raining, we were inside playing legos, games, or crafting.  These days it seems most kids would much rather spend their free time watching television, playing video games or playing on a phone.

My son included….

Preschool Boy Gift Ideas and Duracell Batteries

Preschool Boy Gift Ideas and Duracell Batteries

This year The Love Nugget wants EVERYTHING for Christmas.  At Target browsing the toy aisle, “Maybe santa will bring me this transformer and these legos and these Paw Patrol toys and this book and… and… and.”  We popped into a thrift shop the other day to look for a silver serving tray and he found an old toy tractor and insisted on asking Santa for it while.  He’s even starting to catch on that Santa is watching and he needs to be on his best behavior if he wants him to come to our house.  Gotta love the Holiday season!

Anyway, as he’s been listing off all he wants this year I’ve been making mental notes and a little list for the Grandparents.  Since in my opinion boys tend to be harder to shop for I thought I’d share a few gift ideas for pre-school age boys!

Soft Toys for Education with IKEA

Soft Toys for Education with IKEA

I’ve always been an educator at heart.  From the time I was just a little girl standing in front of a makeshift blackboard instructing my younger brothers and stuffed animals I’ve had a passion for teaching.

When it came to deciding my profession in life I knew which direction I’d go.  Teaching!  Not the highest paying job out there but what’s more rewarding than planting the seed of knowledge into children’s brains?

For me it became even more rewarding when I got my first job teaching in a low income school district.  Right away I discovered just how much education can help not only the students but the parents as well.  Many of my children’s parent’s were migrant workers who’s came to America specifically for education.  Those families were so grateful and appreciative of everything educators do for their children.  They knew the importance of having an education and cherished that their children had the ability to get one.

During my time as a teacher, I found out just how rewarding it was to truly make a difference in a child’s life.  I had students who were being bounced around from foster home to foster home and some that literally wore the same clothes everyday.  For many of those students school was not only a place to learn but also their safe place.  Where they could laugh with other children, be comforted by positive roll models, and better their future by gaining an education.

Unfortunately for many children in the world, getting an education is far from easy.  Which is why companies like the IKEA are making a huge effort to help the worlds most vulnerable children get the education they deserve.  With projects like the Soft Toys for Education Campaign, children all over the world who might not otherwise have a chance to go to school, are able to.  The IKEA foundation aims to improve opportunities for children in some of the worlds poorest communities.  It’s been working too!  Just check out some of the positive changes these countries have seen;

  • Ethiopia:
In Ethiopia, the funding from the Soft Toys for Education campaign has helped increase the enrollment rate of children into grade 1 of primary education, which has now reached 92%. The gross enrolment rate for preprimary schools achieved a significant increase of 15.9 percentage points. Over one year, it went from one in 20 children to one in 5 children getting enrolled in preprimary school. A very encouraging trend!
  • Mozambique:In Mozambique, thanks to the IKEA Foundation’s contribution of Soft Toys for Education campaign funds, 55,000 children in 88 schools were reached with the five components of the ChildFriendly Schools approach: education; protection; water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), health and social mobilization. Children in these schools also received physical education and were trained in important life skills (HIV awareness, awareness on gender issues, and preventing violence and sexual abuse).

Since 2003, more than 11 million children have been impacted through 99 projects in 46 countries. Total amount donated $90.4 million (67 million euro)!  Awesome!

You can help too!  For every Soft Toy or Children’s book sold through November  2014 – January 2015 IKEA donates $1.00 to children’s education projects through UNICEF and Save the Children.  The money will help UNICEF train teachers in child-friendly teaching methods, improve child protection systems, supply educational materials in the schools, help rebuild schools, provide better water and toilet facilities, and increase school attendance rates.

This year the Soft Toy book is titled The Frog Prince and has some cute cuddly creatures to go along with it.  All of which your little one would love and they would make a great Christmas gift!

So regardless if you were born with that passion to teach like me, take a step in helping a child succeed in life by supporting the Soft Toys for Education campaign this year!

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of Clever Girls and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

Can you believe it’s almost Halloween?

I feel like this month has flown by.  So much so that I haven’t had much time to make fun Halloween themed crafts and recipes like I love to do.

I think it’s been hard to get in the mood to make much fall/Halloween things since up until this past week it’s been pretty warm out still.  So the other day I decided to embrace the heat while enjoying a Halloween themed snack in the form of a Smoothie!
