Swanson’s Vitamin Giveaway

Swanson’s Vitamin Giveaway

Hi friends!

Hope you’re all having a great week.  Ours started out normal but unfortunately The Love Nugget came down with the stomach flu Tuesday evening.  Never a fun thing for kids or parents but I will admit as he gets older it’s much easier when he does get sick.  At least he can sense when he’s going to lose it and most the time can make it to the bathroom…  Silver linings right?

Luckily he had a day off of school yesterday already and Wednesday I had a pretty clear schedule.   We spent most the day in our pajamas, lounging on the couch watching movies and playing ABC Mouse online.  Despite a few trips to the bathroom, he was in great spirits, had no fever and didn’t seem that sick so hoping it’s gone by today…

On another note, have you guys heard of Swanson Vitamins?  I had heard of them before and honestly thought they were just what they were called.  A vitamin shop.  Boy was I wrong!

Boys like Princess too!

Boys like Princess too!

Happy Friday!

Hope you had a great week. We had a busy one which was topped off last night at Disney on Ice Dare to Dream!
Even though the basis of the show was around princess, I knew The Love Nugget would still have a good time. Especially since we were going with his best “girlfriend” 🙂

Why is it so hard to get good pictures of kids!?!  AND when do they quit with the fake smiles?   [Read more…]

Getting Prepared for Cold and Flu Season with Kleenex Facial Tissue

Getting Prepared for Cold and Flu Season with Kleenex Facial Tissue

It’s already started around here.

I’m seeing kids with sniffles,  listening to coughing kids while in the grocery stores, and hearing parents talking about how their kids have already gotten the flu.  Yep, it’s cold and flu season!  It seems to hit earlier every year and as a mom it’s important to be prepared for whenever it might strike.  Let’s face it, the last thing you want to do is be running to the store, sick kid in tow, to pick up supplies. Did you know that you can use a paper towel to dry your hair,  to chill white wine or to strain grease from both?

I didn’t either until I learned about those and many more clever ways to switch up everyday tasks using Viva® Vantage® Paper Towels at a fun event I recently attended.

Planning a New Landscape while in a Drought with Scotts® EveryDrop™

Planning a New Landscape while in a Drought with Scotts® EveryDrop™

When we moved into our house nearly two years ago, we knew that the backyard was going to be our biggest project.  At nearly .25 of an acre lot we were excited about the space but definitely dreading all the work we would need to do.  We had hoped to start working on it over a year ago but then the pipe burst incident happened,

And the yard was put on the back burner…

Once we were ready to get moving on working towards a new backyard, we found ourselves in a severe drought 🙁

With major water restrictions we have been unable to plant any new lawn or plant life this summer as we had hoped to.

However, with winter approaching, we are moving forward with our landscaping plans and hoping to get in some nice green grass, lush greenery and hopefully a winter garden within the next couple of months.

The problem is, we aren’t quite yet out of that drought… So we are making sure to take BIG steps towards conserving water to enable we don’t have a huge spike in our water bill.  Or worse get fined for our water usage.

A few ways we’ll be saving on our water consumption as we landscape our yard are by:

1. Finding the best type of grass for our climate.  It gets pretty hot here during the summer (hence the drought) so finding a grass that has a high heat resistance plus drought tolerability is key!  We used this handy chart found here to choose a Bermuda grass for our lawn once we are ready to plant.

2. Watering Wisely.  Early morning is best but it’s also good to watch your lawn and see when it starts to wilt.  Then give it a drink of water in the early morning hours.  You can also use this watering guide to help you determine how much water your lawn might need.

3. Putting in an up to date irrigation system.  The Hubby is on this one and has everything all planned out.  Once in, it’s important to make sure it’s working properly without leaks that could be wasting precious water.

4. Mow less.  Each grass type has a recommended height you should keep it at.  Doing this will allow it to use water more efficiently and reach water that’s deeper in the soil.

5. Feed it well.  Just like humans, lawns need food to stay strong and healthy.  Well fed lawns grow stronger roots that go deeper into the soil and are better at drinking water.

6. Improve circulation.  If soil is too compact, nutrients and water can’t reach it. To maintain good circulation, we’ll be raking decomposing grass and aerating to allow our lawn to breath.

Lastly we’ll be making the most of available water by using Scotts® EveryDrop™ line.

is a water maximizer for lawns and landscapes.  It is a unique blend of wetting agents designed to help move water into the soil, consistently and evenly.  This in turn helps to reduce water runoff and pooling.  Something we desperately want to avoid while in a drought!

What makes Scotts® EveryDrop™ line  unique is that it has taken the technology that professional turf grass managers have used for over 50 years and bringing it to the consumers to use in their own outdoor spaces.  People have noticed great results in using EveryDrop™  and have found they are using 25% less water.  That’s huge when you’re so restricted with you water.

So now that we know we can save a little water by using Scotts® EveryDrop™ line, we are ready to move forward with our landscaping!  I seriously can’t wait to be able to walk barefoot on a nicely hydrated, green lawn!

Not only that but it will be nice to have two white dogs again and a child that is not constantly covered in dirt.
Okay well that last one might not happen.  After all, he is a boy 😉

Who’s still melting in hot weather?!?  I am!  This week we’re back up in the 100’s.  Which I know is mild compared to those in places like Death Valley where it reached 120!  Do people actually live there?  Crazy!

The Love Nugget still insists on playing outside.  While I try to keep him indoors when it’s over 100 degrees it’s hard to argue when he’s happily playing in his sandbox while I try to get something done.  He’s in the shade so i usually allow him to play for a little while but then bring him inside to cool him down.  Which we do by enjoying lots of popsicles, frozen grapes, smoothies and smoothie bowls.

What are BCAA’s and Why You May Need Them.

What are BCAA’s and Why You May Need Them.

Supporting my body with the proper nutrition is something I try really hard to do.  Eating good, clean, nutrient dense foods is great for my body but I’ve noticed that when I’m lifting heavier weights I need a little more support than just the foods I’m eating.  The Hubby does even more than I do as he crossfits several times a week.

I’d been hearing about BCAA’s and the benefits of using them as part of your fitness nutrition.  I was hesitant to add in a supplement as I try to keep things as natural as possible but when I was in Boulder for Blend a few months back, I had the opportunity to learn about Gnarly.  A great company that makes clean, grass-fed protein powder as well as other supplements including BCAA’s.  When they contacted me to see if I’d be interested in trying out their products I immediately knew which one I wanted to try.  The BCAA’s!

Gnarly nutrition strives to create products that are just that, Gnarly!  What makes them Gnarly is that their products are natural, healthy, honest and delicious.  They carry Whey protein powder, Vegan protein powder, and other supplements like the BCAA’s I chose to try out.

Now, let’s get back to why if you’re training you might want to add in this supplement.

BCAA stands for Branch Chain Amino Acids.  They are called Branch Chain because they have side chains that branch off.  Most of us know that Amino Acids are essential building blocks that make up protein.   They are essential because our body cannot manufacture them so we must consume them in foods or supplements.

Branch Chain Amino Acids help your body in a few different ways;

~ They support a healthy immune system

~ Improve exercise performance

~ Reduce muscle breakdown

~ Improves recovery time post workout

~ Prevention of lean muscle mass

~ Protect against amino acid deficiencies

If you are training pretty regularly, you might benefit from taking BCAAs.  Gnarly’s Berry Lemonade is great mixed with water and a little goes a long way.  It’s recommended to take 4-8 grams before a workout and 4-8 after a workout.  Taking them before or during will increase performance.  Taking them after with a post work out meal or recovery drink will help speed the replacement of BCAA’s in the muscles, and help prevent overtraining.

While I haven’t been taking them long, I do notice a difference when I drink them during my workout.  I feel as if I have a little more energy and endurance.  The Hubby enjoys drinking them before and after his crossfit WOD’s.  When I’m able to get back into heavy lifting I’ll definitely be adding them in pre and post workout.

I’m glad that I finally found a reputable company to get BCAA’s from.  Definitely check them out if you’re interested!

  • Do you use supplements for your fitness?
  • Have you tried BCAAs?  Thoughts?

Disclaimer – Gnarly Nutrition provided me with a container of BCAA supplements in exchange for this post.  I was not otherwise compensated and all opinions are my own.

Staying on Track this Busy Summer with Naked Juices

Staying on Track this Busy Summer with Naked Juices

June is flying by and so far this summer we’ve been crazy busy.  From weekends away to weekdays filled with summer fun activities I feel like we have been on the go since May.  Which is fun but can sometimes mean that I’m leaving the house without time to sit down and eat my typical breakfast of protein, veggies and fruit.

Veggies are something I love but when on the go I struggle to get in.  It’s easy to grab a hard-boiled egg, an Epic bar or a protein bar to eat while out and about but veggies are a little more complicated.  Luckily there are on the go options like Naked Juices to fill us up with nutrients when we don’t have time for a full meal.
