Spring Time Fun with Evenflo!

Spring Time Fun with Evenflo!

We are finally getting some Spring like weather here!  I know, I know, Spring doesn’t actually begin for a few weeks but we’ve had such a wet and cold winter that the gorgeous clear blue skies and milder temps are so appreciated around here.

Especially when you have two little boys who love to be outside. [Read more…]

A Healthy Mint Chip Protein Milk Shake

A Healthy Mint Chip Protein Milk Shake

When we were in Disneyland The Love Nugget had his first milk shake from Ghirardelli Chocolate and Soda Fountain.  I know, first milkshake?  We just don’t really eat stuff like that and tend to make smoothies at home so he hadn’t had one. Of course he enjoyed it.  So much that I didn’t even get to snap a picture because it was gone before we knew it!

Upon returning home I wanted to show him that we can have a healthier version of an ice cream treat that’s just as enjoyable.  Luckily I had just received a large package of a delicious protein treat that’s much healthier than your average frozen yogurt.

If You’re Eating Tuna, You Should be Eating Safe Catch!

If You’re Eating Tuna, You Should be Eating Safe Catch!

I used to dislike tuna.  Not fresh tuna but canned tuna.  Mainly because I had heard such horrible things about the fish they use and the way they catch the fish.  Many big brands use longline fishery which is the use of a long fishing line with multiple hooks that can stretch for many miles. Thousands of tons of seabirds, sea turtles, sharks and other marine life are hooked and then left to die on the lines.

So I just avoided it.  Then I discovered that there were companies that were committed to sustainable fishing practices and distributing a product that is safe to eat.  Even still I worried about mercury.  What most people these days worry about when they think about tuna.  Especially those of us with kiddos.  Mercury is highly toxic and kids are most susceptible to the harmful effects.

Luckily there is a brand that is creating a product that is not only sustainable but is produced with tuna that has been individually tested for mercury.  Yes you read that right, EACH fish is tested for their mercury level.

What are BCAA’s and Why You May Need Them.

What are BCAA’s and Why You May Need Them.

Supporting my body with the proper nutrition is something I try really hard to do.  Eating good, clean, nutrient dense foods is great for my body but I’ve noticed that when I’m lifting heavier weights I need a little more support than just the foods I’m eating.  The Hubby does even more than I do as he crossfits several times a week.

I’d been hearing about BCAA’s and the benefits of using them as part of your fitness nutrition.  I was hesitant to add in a supplement as I try to keep things as natural as possible but when I was in Boulder for Blend a few months back, I had the opportunity to learn about Gnarly.  A great company that makes clean, grass-fed protein powder as well as other supplements including BCAA’s.  When they contacted me to see if I’d be interested in trying out their products I immediately knew which one I wanted to try.  The BCAA’s!

Gnarly nutrition strives to create products that are just that, Gnarly!  What makes them Gnarly is that their products are natural, healthy, honest and delicious.  They carry Whey protein powder, Vegan protein powder, and other supplements like the BCAA’s I chose to try out.

Now, let’s get back to why if you’re training you might want to add in this supplement.

BCAA stands for Branch Chain Amino Acids.  They are called Branch Chain because they have side chains that branch off.  Most of us know that Amino Acids are essential building blocks that make up protein.   They are essential because our body cannot manufacture them so we must consume them in foods or supplements.

Branch Chain Amino Acids help your body in a few different ways;

~ They support a healthy immune system

~ Improve exercise performance

~ Reduce muscle breakdown

~ Improves recovery time post workout

~ Prevention of lean muscle mass

~ Protect against amino acid deficiencies

If you are training pretty regularly, you might benefit from taking BCAAs.  Gnarly’s Berry Lemonade is great mixed with water and a little goes a long way.  It’s recommended to take 4-8 grams before a workout and 4-8 after a workout.  Taking them before or during will increase performance.  Taking them after with a post work out meal or recovery drink will help speed the replacement of BCAA’s in the muscles, and help prevent overtraining.

While I haven’t been taking them long, I do notice a difference when I drink them during my workout.  I feel as if I have a little more energy and endurance.  The Hubby enjoys drinking them before and after his crossfit WOD’s.  When I’m able to get back into heavy lifting I’ll definitely be adding them in pre and post workout.

I’m glad that I finally found a reputable company to get BCAA’s from.  Definitely check them out if you’re interested!

  • Do you use supplements for your fitness?
  • Have you tried BCAAs?  Thoughts?

Disclaimer – Gnarly Nutrition provided me with a container of BCAA supplements in exchange for this post.  I was not otherwise compensated and all opinions are my own.

Staying on Track this Busy Summer with Naked Juices

Staying on Track this Busy Summer with Naked Juices

June is flying by and so far this summer we’ve been crazy busy.  From weekends away to weekdays filled with summer fun activities I feel like we have been on the go since May.  Which is fun but can sometimes mean that I’m leaving the house without time to sit down and eat my typical breakfast of protein, veggies and fruit.

Veggies are something I love but when on the go I struggle to get in.  It’s easy to grab a hard-boiled egg, an Epic bar or a protein bar to eat while out and about but veggies are a little more complicated.  Luckily there are on the go options like Naked Juices to fill us up with nutrients when we don’t have time for a full meal.

Summer Reading with Disney Story Central!

Summer Reading with Disney Story Central!

Summer’s here get hot and even though we are barely into June we’re already experiencing temperatures over 100 degrees!  It’s pretty miserable especially when we’re also in a drought and can’t head outdoors to play in water to cool off.  So with an active four year old I’m having to find fun things to do indoors to keep him entertained.  I try to keep him busy with painting, playing with playdough, building indoor forts, reading books, dancing to music etc.  Like a normal 4 year old these days though he really enjoys watching T.V. or playing on an iPad.  Since we limit his technology time we try to make sure we don’t over do it with this.  When he does get technology time, we try to make sure that it’s learning centered.

Lately we’ve been enjoying allowing him to read interactive books on Disney Story Central.

Droid Turbo Sapphire Blue by Motorola

Droid Turbo Sapphire Blue by Motorola

Last month when we were at the Garth Brooks concert there was a woman a few rows in front of me video taping on here phone.  Not abnormal since most everyone was doing the same at one point or another.  What caught my eye was that the clarity of the image on her phone was pristine.  Like I said, I was two rows back and it was like watching Garth singing on a high definition T.V.

I’m near sighted so I was quite amazed at the clarity of her screen.  So I interrupted my husbands “solo” (he thought he was Garth Brooks that night) and pointed out her phone.  “Honey look, her phone is amazing what is it?”

Him – “You can see that with your old eyes?”

Me – “Yes, it’s so clear!”

Him – “It looks like it’s a Droid.”

So began my research into a new phone.  I’m due for an upgrade this month so it was perfect timing.  Since I don’t buy anything without researching it I began checking out facts and reviews of the new Motorola DROID Turbo Sapphire.
