Kids in the Kitchen #6 – Grain, Nut, Soy and Dairy-free Heathy Bites

Kids in the Kitchen #6 – Grain, Nut, Soy and Dairy-free Heathy Bites

Hey there!

I promise I didn’t forget about Kid’s in the Kitchen.  We just haven’t done a lot of cooking together lately for some reason.  The Love Nugget is getting more into playing with legos, transformers and out in the dirt than spending time with me in the kitchen.  Sniff, sniff…  The joys of boys right!?!

However, the other day I got him to help me make a nut-free, grain-free and dairy-free snack that he could safely take with him to school.  Like most schools these days, his is a nut-free zone.  So even though we love using them in our snacks for a good source of protein and healthy fats, we have to come up with other options for school snacks.   Which is okay because I like to get creative!

So here’s our latest Kid’s in the Kitchen feature 🙂

First things first, before bringing your child into the kitchen to help, make sure your counters, etc are safe.  No knives, sharp objects, or things that they can injure themselves with.  Obviously make sure they thoroughly wash their hands and have a safe stool to stand on.  We break that last rule a little and often use one of our bar stools but would love to have one of these for our kitchen adventures some day!

Now, once your kitchen is safe and your kids are clean, apron on and ready to go, it’s time to start the fun!

How we Combat Sickness with our 3 year old

How we Combat Sickness with our 3 year old

It’s funny how kids can get sick and continue to go on with their day, playing, talking, running around like nothing.  When an adult gets sick (in particular a grown man and I know I’m not alone on this one), they act like the world is ending!  Can’t get off the couch, can’t get out of bed, can’t do any chores…. I know many women, especially moms,  will agree that the world definitely does not end when we get sick.  Am I right?

Anyway, luckily The Hubby and I are not sick right now.  In fact (knocking on wood as I type) I haven’t been sick in ages!  I chalk it up to all the greens, high quality foods, bone broth, fish oil and supplements I take.  Or I’m just lucky 🙂

The Love Nugget is not so lucky right now.  He’s caught a bit of a cold.  Bound to happen this time of year when he’s being exposed to all sorts of germs at school, the gym, and places we go to play.  I could keep him in a bubble during cold and flu season and try to avoid getting sick but what fun is that?  Plus, we have a good routine down to battle that sickness when it does happen which shortens the duration and makes things more manageable.

I thought I’d share with you how we battle sickness in our house with The Love Nugget.

Kids in the Kitchen #4 – Ants on a Log

Kids in the Kitchen #4 – Ants on a Log

Hey there!

I’m a little behind on these Kids in the Kitchen posts just because we’ve been so busy lately!  That and The Love Nugget has been more interested in playing outside than being in the kitchen.

He’s such an outdoorsy boy!

Today’s Kids in the Kitchen is one that is simple and probably one you’ve made before.  If you haven’t though, it’s a great way to get your kids to eat celery and sneak in some healthy fat from nut butter 🙂

Kids in the Kitchen #1 – Trail Mix

Kids in the Kitchen #1 – Trail Mix

When I was little I have fond memories of being in the kitchen with my family. From licking the batter off the spoon when making cake with my grandma to making monster toast with my mom there was a lot of time spent in the kitchen that I believe helped shape my healthy living goals when it comes to my family now. That and my education background motivates me to encourage other parents to allow their kids to help in the kitchen.

Which is why I’m starting a new series here on the blog called,
