Happy Fitness Friday!

We are halfway through bootcamp already!  It is going by soo fast and I’m loving every minute of it.  Even though some workouts are REALLY challenging (like L-wall stands to wall walk ups) and some are not so challenging.  I enjoy each workout just the same.  I am still adding in more cardio and fitness classes but know that I would not be seeing the large increase in strength and muscle that I have without Fitmixer Bootcamp.  I love it and will be sad when it’s over.

Now, on to this weeks workouts and a little motivational message…

Sunday – Rest

Monday – Pyramid Treadmill Run (See below) +

Fitmixer boot camp “It’s All Down Hill From Here”

For this treadmill workout, I would recommend starting at a slower pace if you are not an avid runner.  Not only is my body used to running, I have long legs so a fast speed is fine for me.  It might not be for you so adjust as needed 🙂

Tuesday – 30 minute elliptical + Fitmixer Bootcamp “Rock and Roll Circuit”

Wednesday – Spin class at 24 hour + Fitmixer Bootcamp “Full House 3”

Thursday – Fitmixer Bootcamp, “Wall Art”

Part One

  • Step back and tap – 30 reps
  • Lunge and tap – 30 reps
  • Lunge and knee-lift – 30 reps
  • Gate Swings – 30 reps
  • Side leg lifts – 30 reps
  • *Repeat on other leg

Part Two

  • Calf Raises – 90 reps (30 straight, 30 toes out, 30 toes in)
  • Wall Sit, lift one leg with arms out – 30 seconds per leg
  • Lever V-sit against the wall, full range of motion – 30 reps
  • Lever V-sit against the wall, pulse at top  – 30 reps
  • Start with Letter L Wall Stand, then “walk” towards the wall to a full handstand, hold, “walk” back out to Letter L – 3 times
  • Reverse Crunches, laying flat on floor, full range of motion – 30 reps
  • Reverse Crunches, laying flat on floor, pulse at top – 30 reps
  • Clap Push-ups at the wall – 30 reps

Friday – 4 mile run  + Fitmixer bootcamp

The e-card up above is perfect for this week as I felt I accomplished a little something.   The First time we did L-wall stands I could barely keep my feet on the wall, let alone hold it for 1 minute.  This week we had to begin in a L-wall stand, then walk our feet up the wall as we walked our hands back towards the wall.  Finishing in a wall handstand facing the wall.  I watched the video thinking, “yeah right!”  We were supposed to do 3… I did 4!  Woo hoo!  Although they might not have looked as perfect as the instructor, I still did them and that my friends is progress 🙂

Yesterday the Love Nugget got to play with two of his good buddies.  We went to the park to meet some friends and play for a bit before we went to Costco.

Luckily we beat the cold weather that rolled in early afternoon.  It was nice for a change but made me want to get in my PJ’s and cuddle!

Later in the day, his other buddy came over to play.

They had fun running around being crazy boys!

This morning I had an apt to get my hair done so we had to get up and out the door by 9:00.  I don’t usually take the Love Nugget but decided to give it a try.  He was sooo good!  Sat in his stroller reading and playing games.  Such a good little guy 🙂

For the rest of the day today we are relaxing, enjoying this cooler weather.  This weekend we don’t have too much planned which is kind of nice for a change.  We have a photo shoot on Sunday and that’s about it!  I’m sure something will come up though.

Loving all that you are and being a good role model

Today I caught just a few minutes fo Katie (Katie Couric’s new show).  I was drawn in by todays topic of eating disorders specifically the segment with a young girl and her mother.  The daughter, discussed how she had watched her moms obsession with her body image for years.  She remembered her mom slaving for hours over a cake for her 6th birthday that her mom then refused to eat.   She watched her mom only order waters and salads at restaurants afraid she would gain a pound.  She heard her mom constantly bashing herself, yo-yo dieting and worrying about her weight ever since she could remember.  This, she said, eventually led her to develop her own battle with an eating disorder.

This reminded me of an article I read and a post I published a few months back that is closely related to this subject.

We All Do It

We all do it.  We all stand in front of the mirror and pick ourselves apart.  Whether you’re male or female, fit or not fit, old or young, at some point in our lives we do it.  I know I do and as hard as I try not to, I’ll admit that I do it almost daily.

I used to obsess over my weight and appearance.  So much so that when I was in middle school I battled with anorexia.  The pressures of fitting in, looking good and my peers led me down a path that was dangerous and scary.  I can remember at one point, standing in the shower pulling chunks of my hair out.  Another time, I passed out in the bathroom and came within centimeters of smacking my head on the toilet.

Luckily, I got help.  I had a teacher who reached out to me and divulged her secret that she too had battled an eating disorder and desperately wanted to help me.  I learned how to eat healthy and stay active.  While I’ve had my ups and downs with weight gain and loss over the past years, I have never allowed myself to get to the point of no return.

I have also learned to love my body.  Is it perfect?  Hell no!  Especially since I had a baby and if you’re a mom, I’m sure you know how your body just changes.  I’ve learned that as I get older I have to work harder to stay in shape.  I’ve learned that while I might not be as skinny as I once was, I eat healthy.  I workout.  I have muscles.  I’m in shape.  And as I get older, my body will thank me.

Why am I bringing this up?

I read this article today that Janetha from Meals&Moves shared and was reminded of my past experiences and how society pushes you to look a certain way.  Sure, we discuss this all the time.  But what really got to me about the article was how her daughters were so concerned about their body image.  This made me think about my own children (child now but hopefully children one day), and how I hope that they can feel confident in their own skin and disregard that image that society pushes on us.  I hope that I can help them to live healthy, stay active and understand that as long as you do those things, you are doing good for your body.  Even if you’re not that image that you see in the magazines or on T.V., but that being healthy is more than just looking good.

As a teacher, I know the power of modeling.  Not modeling like runway modeling.  Modeling like teaching by showing and leading by example.  This means that, as hard as it is some days, as my children grow and watch my “modeling,” I need to not step on the scale everyday.  I need to be okay if I skip a workout one day or eat a cupcake without running the next morning.  I need to show them that, as the article states, I Am Not My Body.  We are much more than what we look like on the outside.  Even though I know how important it is to take care of our bodies, it’s also important to be happy with who we are.  Inside and out.

I share this with you in hopes that you too will lead by example and work to show your children that We Are Not Our Bodies.

Through the Fitmixer Bootcamp program I am participating in right now, we are getting much more than workouts, meal plans and supplements.  We are getting life lessons on how to really love ourselves inside and out.  We are getting a huge amount of support from the Fitmixer team as well as other bootcamp participants.  It’s been great to hear others discuss the same struggles that I have gone through and to know that we are not alone.  I feel like it is helping me to truly embrace myself for all that I am rather than focusing on what I think my flaws are.  This will in turn help me to be a good “healthy” role model for my children.  Today’s segment I caught on Katie was a reminder that I have little eyes watching me and little ears listening to me all the time.  Hopefully by embracing my flaws and loving myself, I can keep them from traveling down the same dangerous path that myself and others have gone down.
