What’s a Challenge Group and Why it Might Work For You

What’s a Challenge Group and Why it Might Work For You

Hi friends!

I feel like I’ve been writing a lot of pregnancy posts lately…  Well, not necessarily a lot since lets be honest, I haven’t been writing much these days.  Time, energy, and desire have been contributing factors in that.  BUT, with baby due any day and me taking some time off from coaching these last few weeks before he arrives, I’ve got a little more time on my hands.  So back to blogging I go!  Which actually feels good!  I do enjoy and miss it 🙂

Anyway, today I wanted to talk a little bit about Challenge Groups.  Something that if you follow me on Social Media you’ve seen me sharing about.

Let’s start with the basics,

Exercise During the Third Trimester

Exercise During the Third Trimester

Hi guys!

I’m half-way through the third trimester now which means we’ll be meeting our little guy soon!   Hopefully sooner than later but don’t we all wish for that.  I’ve mentioned before that The Love Nugget was two weeks late.   My doctor has already said they won’t let me go that long over due since there is now way we are off on our dates as far as being later.  However, my doctor took a leave of absence due to some family emergency so I meet with a new doc in a week.  At this point I’m fine with it since typically a midwife delivers anyway but part of me is a little annoyed because I really like my doctor.  He is the head of perinatology at the hospital and as I see other doctors I learn more about the route he took with me wasn’t what everyone else would have done. Keep your Fitness Fresh with Cottonelle

I’m now almost 34 weeks pregnant and nearing the end.  If you’ve been pregnant before you know that with the third trimester comes some unpleasant side effects.   Fatigue, heartburn, the return of nausea, back pain, stretch marks, varicose veins and the constant urge to pee are just a few.  Some of which I’ve experienced and luckily, some of which I have not.  One that has hit me hard though and has made for some annoying situations has been the constant urge to urinate along with the occasional leaky bladder.

Exercise During my Second Trimester

Exercise During my Second Trimester

Hi guys!

I’ve gotten quite a few inquiries as to what my exercise routine looks like now that I’m pregnant.  To be honest, the first trimester I didn’t have much of a routine.  I worked out when I felt okay which wasn’t all too often.  Even then it was more mild exercises like yoga, plyo, pilates, or modified Burn-I.T. (formally Afterburn) workouts.  Once I got past 14 weeks or so, I started to feel so much better and had a ton more energy.  Exercise became my friend again but of course with a few modifications.

Happy New Year friends!

Hope you all had a wonderful evening celebrating the New Year.  We didn’t do anything to spectacular this year.  We walked down to our neighbor’s house and enjoyed a yummy dinner while watching the kids run around.  We ended up walking home around 10:00 and I went straight to bed with a headache.  I find that the later I stay up and on my feet, the worse I feel by the time I go to bed.  Pregnancy perks.  I fell asleep right away but was awoken at 12:00 by the dogs going crazy barking because someone close by was celebrating with some very illegal fireworks.  Shook the whole house illegal.  Anyway, of course I’m up early this morning so taking advantage of the quiet house to get a few things done.  Like online shopping!

Top 5 Reasons why a Small Fitness Studios Rock!

Top 5 Reasons why a Small Fitness Studios Rock!

There was a time in my life where I frequented a big box gym.  I would go almost daily and would usually spend my time on cardio equipment then wander around doing a few machines before giving up and going home.   If I went to a class, I would quietly grab my equipment, find a spot in the back and focus on my workout just as everyone else in the class was doing.  I blended into the mass and followed along through the class trying to pay attention to my form but even if I was wrong I very rarely got corrected because there were so many people for the instructor to attend to.  For this reason, the classes all remained at one basic level.  It wasn’t until I became a group fitness instructor that I realized most instructors are taught to focus on the general population.  Not on challenging those that could work harder but on making sure everyone can do the basic exercise.

To be honest, for quite sometime, I thought this was just how ALL gyms and group fitness classes were. That is until I discovered there were small group training studios like Afterburn where I teach now.  After my first class I knew my days at a big box gym would soon be minimal.  I immediately felt at home and looked forward to my days at Afterburn whether I was training or working out.

Why Purchasing the 21 Day Fix was a Good Decision for my Health

Why Purchasing the 21 Day Fix was a Good Decision for my Health

Hi guys!

How is it already Thursday?  Seriously where did the week go?   Not complaining, I’m always ready for the weekend 🙂
Speaking of, we have another wedding this weekend which is funny because we had zero weddings for a while then we were invited to three this month. I guess October is a popular month to get married this year!  We got married in June but after attending a few fall weddings I’m almost wishing we had gone with an October wedding. I mean, I love fall so it definitely would have been enjoyed by me 🙂  Well, as long as it didn’t rain. Guess that’s a gamble with fall weddings.  It won’t be raining this weekend so we’ll be enjoying the outdoor party!

Anyway, today I wanted to touch on the 21 Day Fix.  I mentioned a while back that I had purchased and completed the program but I just wanted to go into a little more depth about how it’s benefited my overall health.

Afterburn Clean Eating Challenge Celebration

Afterburn Clean Eating Challenge Celebration

Hi there!

Who’s ready for the weekend?  We’re almost there I can see it!  I’m ready as it’s been a long, but fun week.  The Love Nugget and I have been having fun while The Hubby has been gone but are very much anticipating his return today. We missed him greatly but were so busy we didn’t have too much time to notice he was gone.  Last night for example, we were out late partying it up at Afterburn!

Last month I led a clean eating challenge with a handful of clients from the gym.  They all worked so hard and we wanted to celebrate that hard work with a fun little celebration.

How I Stepped off the Scale and Learned to Respect my Body

How I Stepped off the Scale and Learned to Respect my Body

Since I can remember I’ve had this obsession with the scale.  Obviously a lot of it stems from years of yoyo dieting, eating disorders and body issues.  However, even as I got over those things I still struggled with not stepping on the scale every single day.  It’s silly really that we put so much emphasis on a number.  I mean, what does that number really tell us?  Our health?  Our power to love?  Our self worth?  NO!!!!!  It tells us how much our bones, fat, muscle and organs weigh.  Something that is going to be ever changing as we age and grow.  Even when we are adults and we think we are done growing our body is still changing.  So of course we shouldn’t expect to see the same number we saw when we were in high school or even when we were in our twenties.  Our bodies mature and change and with that we should accept that number to change as well.

Now I’m not saying we should sit back and watch it steep to some obscene number as we gain weight unhealthfully.  I’m saying that we shouldn’t have the expectation of it remaining the same as years go by and our bodies change.

It took me many years to realize this.  Honestly it wasn’t until this past year where I spent so much time struggling with the weight gained for fertility, that I learned to respect my body a little more.  Part of that respect came from stepping off the scale.  Like I said, for years I was waking up daily, emptying my body of liquids with a trip to the bathroom, then stripping down and stepping on the scale.  Every morning.  Then I would let that number judge of how my day would go.  If that number was up I made sure I hit the gym hard and cut back on calories.  If that number was low I might have an active recovery day or an actual rest day.  Maybe allow myself to splurge a little more than I would if it was up.  Ridiculous right?  The crazy thing is, I know that millions of other women do the same thing.  I know this because they’ve told me.  I’ve had so many conversations with friends, or just women in general where we’ve joked about how we allow that number to control our lives.

“Want another glass of wine?”  “Oh no thank you I was up a few pounds today.”

“Let’s go get a frozen yogurt.”  “I can’t I gained a few pounds over the weekend.”

You’ve probably heard it and maybe even said it at one point or another.  But why?  Why do we let that number run our lives?  Don’t we matter so much more than a  silly number?

YES!  AND at 34 I’m finally realizing this.  For the past several months I’ve found myself waking in the mornings and bypassing the scale.  Then going about my day without thinking about it or the number I would have seen at all.  You know what?  It’s been quite freeing really.  I find that I’m no longer stressing about what that number will be tomorrow throughout the day.  No longer worrying how what I put in my mouth will affect it or if I’m spending enough time at the gym.

The biggest thing I’ve noticed is a new respect for my body.  Before when I was stepping on the scale daily, I would shame my body if that number was much higher than it was before.  I would feel mad, depressed, and frustrated with the way I looked.  Now, as I’ve stepped away from the scale, I no longer notice those feelings.  Even when I put on a pair of jeans that no longer fits, or go shopping and notice I’m no longer the size I once was.  I respect that my body isn’t what it was when I was in my twenties, let alone a few years ago.  I’ve come to respect that muscle weighs more than fat and while I might have weighed less in the past, I have more muscle now that contributes to that number being higher.   Even though I’ve always known this, for years I didn’t embrace it.

It’s sad really.  The amount of time I spent stressing over being a certain weight or looking a certain way.  What’s really important is being truly healthy.  At this time in my life, truly healthy means carrying more body fat so I can hopefully one day soon carry a healthy baby.  It’s taken me a few years to honor my body for all it’s doing for me and I can honestly say that stepping away from the scale has helped me to do that.  To treasure this amazing thing that I have rather than worry about a silly number.

So I challenge you ladies (and gentlemen) to step away from the scale!  To learn to love your body for all it’s done for you and will do for you in the future.  To embrace your curves and respect your muscles.  To nourish your body with good healthy food and an active lifestyle not just to lose weight but because you love your body and you want it to be healthy. Who knows, maybe you’ll find with your newfound love for your body that you lose those last 10 pounds or gain the muscle you’ve been wanting to.  You’ll never know if you don’t try it 🙂
