Favorite Things Party!

“Raindrops on Roses and Whiskers on Kittens.”  Do you know what that’s from?  It’s the song My Favorite Things, from The Sound of Music, one of my all time favorite movies!  So when I saw a Favorite Things party idea on Pinterest, I jumped at the chance to throw one.  I waited patiently until it was closer to Christmas even though this party could have easily been done any time of the year.  It was tough to schedule being that during the month of December everyone is pretty busy.  However, we finally had the chance to get together and share a few of our favorite things last week.  It was so much fun!

Glasses for a yummy holiday cocktail I made

Bags for guests to take home their goodies in with a few favorites of mine, Almond Butter Chocolate Chip Granola, A bag of Tazo Green Tea and Peppermint Bark Squares.

Everyone brought an appetizer to share which was so nice and helpful since I didn’t have to spend all day in the kitchen cooking!

How cute are these Christmas tree pita hummus bites that one of my friends brought!?!

I made one of my favorite dips that is always  a huge hit at parties.  It is so simple and only has 4 ingredients!

Mascarpone Turkey Bacon Dip (adapted from Giada’s Mascarpone dip)

1 small tub of mascarpone cheese
1/2 cup non-fat greek yogurt (small container of Chobani or Fage)
1/4 cup chopped fresh chives
4-5 strips of nitrate free turkey bacon (Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods both have really good ones)
Salt and pepper to taste
Homemade Whole Wheat Pita Chips (see below)

Line a baking sheet with foil and preheat the oven to 350 degrees.  Bake turkey bacon for 15 minutes or until crispy, flipping halfway through.   While the bacon is baking, mix mascarpone cheese, greek yogurt and chives in a medium bowl.  Allow bacon to cool slightly then chop and add to the dip.  Season with salt and pepper then refrigerate for at least an hour.  Serve with homemade whole wheat pita chips.

Whole Wheat Pita Chips

4 or more whole wheat pitas (if you can find the pocketless, these work best)
olive oil
1 tbsp. dried oregano
salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Slice pitas into 8 wedges then spread onto a baking sheet.  Brush or spray with olive oil then sprinkle with oregano, salt and pepper.  Bake for 10 minutes watching carefully as they burn easily.  Flip once throughout the cooking process.  Allow to cool and crisp before serving with dip!

Oh, and that yummy holiday cocktail!

Pomegranate Citrus Holiday Cocktail

1/2 cup orange vodka
1 bottle sparkling wine
1 cup blood orange Italian soda
1 cup club soda
1/4 cup pomegranate juice
1/4 cup fresh orange juice
pomegranate seeds to garnish

Mix all ingredients together, serve over ice and enjoy!

Okay now onto the Favorite Things!

I asked everyone to purchase 5 of one thing they really liked.  They had to stay within a $5-$7 range which meant you had to put a little more thought into it.  I purchased one of my favorite holiday candles and bubble bath from Bath and Body Works.

When guests arrived they wrote their name on five strips of paper and we put it into a bowl.  Everyone brought such fun gifts!

Before we started “gifting” we played a little game I found on Pinterest.

There were two winners but luckily the prize I had purchased was a set of Philosophy lotion and body wash so they split it 🙂

After the game, some munching and sipping we started drawing for our Favorite Things!  The way it worked was one person drew out five names then shared what they brought with those five people.  If you drew your own name or a repeat you just put it back in.   It was so much fun to get together with friends and share a few of our favorite things!

We’ve already discussed doing another party like this for Mother’s Day!  Can’t wait!

  • Have you heard of or been to a Favorite Things Party?
